Portfolio Site

Welcome to my portfolio site. After several years of intending to put something like this together, I finally set aside an afternoon and voila! Done – took about 3-4 hours.

Needless to say, the web has changed a great deal since 1997, when I first got involved in this industry. The development and administration of large corporate sites (or families if sites, in multiple languages) like those at my present employer are too much for one person alone to undertake – they require a team and a great deal of custom code.

Smaller sites like this one, on the other hand, no longer have to be coded tediously by hand. Instead, it is usually faster to simply install an open-source content management platform of some sort (e.g. wordpress or Joomla), purchase an inexpensive template or theme, and then modify to suit with components and plugins. Here are a few of the best premium (paid) theme sources:

From 2005-2006 I was a huge fan of Joomla, but eventually grew frustrated with its limited capabilities. That’s a subject for another post, but for now I can say that WordPress is my platform of choice for freelance clients and what I recommend to friends.
